Typical Doctor Who story in theory… This attempted reboot in 1996 on Fox failed, as we’d have to wait to 2005 and Christopher Eccelston’s 9th Doctor. Back to the movie. Looking back on the cheesy parts of all Doctor Who 60’s to 80’s – this movie was truly an in between what was the original series and the new reboot starting in 2005. Was the movie great? no, was it bad? No, just not great but it had its moments. Was Eric Roberts over the top as the Master? Yup – then again almost every incarnation of the Master was up to that point. Half human? Well people are divided on that, then again it would explain his “liking” of humans so much… The kiss? Well he is a man, a lonely man…. And while be honest the TARDIS control room definitely had a steam punk feel that continued on to the new series, which is a great thing!
So again why all the hate? Prolly because the nostalgia ruined it for many – then again it also took brunt of hate before the actual series reboot in 2005, so that is a good thing.
I liked it, it could have been better, but then again anyone whose seen the new series can say the same about a few of the episodes… And lets be honest any Doctor Who with ‘The Movie’ in the title is prolly gonna fail… it took decades in episode format to gain a cult following… the movies just fall flat… if it was a mini series maybe it’d have been different… oh well – we can’t go back and change the past…. 😉
