The Zoo

If we never met,  would you ever knew that I existed?

That despite all the turmoil I pushed on and persisted

If I never speak again,  Will you know who I was?

The things that I stood for, believed in and loved

A solitary existence,  an exhibit for view

Society has purchased its ticket to attend the zoo

To come poke fun at the outcasts, the miscreants and freaks

The oddities that don’t belong, the dorks, nerds and geeks

Cast your stones from the pedestal provided for you

From upon such a perch, no wrong can you do

But eventually you must step down so others may throw

No longer the spotlight, where will you go?

After the show,  such a terrible sight

Forced to see captivity and experience our plight

Long to experience that thrill as part of the show

Unable to move on, impossible to grow

Can taste where you were, the power you had

Taunting you slowly until you go mad

In an effort to gain some semblance of control

You lower your sights and give up your soul

The next time the bell rings,  they arrive to see you

As you feel the first stone,  let me be the first… to welcome you to the zoo
